Back to Reality: Addressing Social Media Stress Due to FOMO

The Issue

FOMO, or "fear of missing out," is a major concern becoming more widespread and may cause much stress in your life. It generates a significant deal of aggravation and negatively influences our physical and mental health, creating mood swings, loneliness, feelings of inferiority, low self-esteem, excessive social anxiety, and increased levels of negativity and melancholy. In addition, FOMO makes people’s concentration zeroed and makes them lose their sense of personality.

In history, there was a known person who died because of FOMO, and it is Emily Dickenson. She is said to be an agoraphobe who never left her house. If you think you are struggling from the same situation, here are some symptoms that say you are suffering from FOMO: always saying yes, high social media activity, low life satisfaction, shiny object syndrome, concern about other people's opinions, distracted driving, and many more.

FOMO has been wandering throughout the 21st century and has been much more prevalent ever since there is a worldwide population leaning towards social media. With that being said, our team, the RealVengers Against the Empire FOMO, decided to focus our campaign on addressing FOMO, and let us tell you more about it.

Back to Reality is a FOMO-focused campaign founded by us, the RealVengers, with the intention of bringing people closer and getting them back in touch with reality, and we will make that happen through fun and creativity.

Our Mission: We strive to raise FOMO awareness and promote a balanced life on and off social media, through active engagement in gadget-free activities that the whole family can enjoy.

Our Vision: We aim to save people from the FOMO empire, as we bring them closer and get them back in touch with reality.

Help our campaign grow too! Kindly answer our feedback form about our campaign. Let us know your FOMO-related experiences and give us suggestions on how we can improve this campaign!

Along with our vision and mission, the following objectives of the campaign are also to:

  • Raise awareness on the negative impacts of FOMO on one’s wellbeing.
  • Promote healthy and moderate usage of social media on a daily basis.
  • Promote active engagement in recreational activities.
  • Encourage spending more time with loved ones.
  • Encourage balancing life both inside and outside of social media.
  • Get people in touch with reality again.
  • Promote practicing 1-2 hours of abstaining from gadgets and the internet every day.
  • Have activities that don't involve the use of gadgets or social media.
  • Express one's self without keeping up with the trends.

Note: The campaign does not discourage the use of social media, but encourages limiting its usage to a healthy and moderate amount of time.

Aside from educating people about FOMO, the purpose of our campaign is to ensure the negative effects of FOMO will gradually expunge from the young minds and promote the enjoyment of life outside the internet by the scheduling of seminars and advisable practices. This way, the people who cannot escape FOMO will be withdrawing from the addiction of surfing social media, and lessen the possibility of occurring mental illnesses. Our team wants to bring people closer and get them back in touch with reality.

In our campaign, we will be hosting seminars, creating recommended social media screen time schedules that you can follow as well as lists of self-care and recreational activities that you, your family, and friends can try together. We are also planning to conduct gadget and social media-free activities in a particular community (for now) wherein we can meet new people and have fun outside social media. We have a lot more in store for you, so stay tuned!

The budget needed for this campaign is around ₱3,000 for now, considering that our target is teenagers and millennials and our campaign is only starting to grow. We will be distributing emails to those who are interested in sponsoring our said campaign. This campaign is going to be focusing the betterment of the youth's health through limiting the use of social media or gadgets by conducting gadget and social media free-activities. The plan is to advertise this on different social media platforms and if possible, an actual advertisement, this is to encourage us to lessen our gadget time and avoid FOMO. If you will help our campaign grow, we can raise more funds to conduct activities with more people and in other communities, but of course, in the safest ways!

Is our campaign worth our group's and sponsor's time, effort, and money, you may ask. Well, our campaign not only can help people suffering from FOMO, but can also save lives. Some of our members have also struggled from FOMO, and they would also like to use this opportunity as a means to help others overcome FOMO as well. We, the RealVengers share (information), because we care!

Our campaign can also make people appreciate life outside social media more. Thus, helping them develop a healthier lifestyle. Social media is a virtual world, and we sometimes focus too much on it that we forget to appreciate what we have in reality, like our family and friends and the opportunities to spend time with them. With us, the RealVengers, and our campaign, we can bring friends and families closer and help make social media a healthy space for each one of us to enjoy. The change we need to see will start with us,

If you are still wondering if our campaign worth our group's and sponsor's time, effort, and money, it definitely is. The lives that we will change will all be worth it, just like every minute and peso dedicated to our campaign.

So, to our beloved sponsors (manifesting!) we deeply thank you with all our hearts and can promise you one thing, not we, not you, but us together we can save lives. Let us do it for the better and change ourselves for the better.
