Changes to GSW dress code

The Issue

Nobody’s ever made a change by being silent. This petition isn’t made to get rid of the dress code at Gardner South Wilmington High School, it’s made to make changes in the dress code. By signing this petition you support the idea of changing the dress code to not sexualize women. In the GSW dress code it states,”Students have the right to dress and groom themselves according to their (or their parents’) personal tastes, as long as such dress and grooming does not present health and safety hazards or substantially disrupt the educational process.” The handbook then proceeds to state a list of rules that target females. As a student who attends GSW I’d like to mention that during summer/spring months classrooms can get very warm but due to our handbook females are unable to wear clothing that would keep them cool and still be considered “school appropriate”. On another note, styles have changed. “Trendy” clothing for females often entail cropped shirts or shorter length shorts. As mentioned, this petition isn’t made to get rid of the dress code but for females sake, rules like the 2 finger rule when it comes to tank tops or mid-thigh for shorts are not put in place for the females sake, but for the sake of males. By signing this petition you agree that GSW dress code should be changed.
