STOP DISORGANIZED CUNY FROM DROPPING STUDENTS FROM CLASSES ON 9.27.2021
The Issue
Are you a CUNY student? Are you safe in your courses, scholarships, or status as a full-time student? CUNY THREATENS TO UNENROLL MARGINALIZED STUDENTS DURING FIRST SEMESTER BACK FROM THE PANDEMIC DUE TO DISORGANIZATION.
DURING A PANDEMIC where students are still worrying about deaths in their families, employment, health and schooling concerns. We are very concerned that by Monday 9.27.2021 hundreds perhaps thousands of students will be kicked out of hybrid courses WITH NO REFUND because their paperwork for vaccination has not been received. We believe this will disproportionately impact freshmen who are still figuring out how to DO college, working students who are juggling many responsibilities, and Black and Brown students and the many students who recently submitted their information but it has not been processed yet due to college overwhelm and disorganization.
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
At first, CUNY said they would allow many courses to remain exclusively virtual, then after a mandate from the state they changed them to 50-60 percent hybrid courses. At QC, some students weren't even notified their class was had changed from FULLY ONLINE to HYBRID until they were IN the class itself. THIS IS HIGHLY UNFAIR to students. While we understand CUNY and colleges such as Queens College, Queensborough, Hunter, Baruch, and John Jay, and all the 25 colleges must keep everyone safe and require everyone who comes on campus to be vaccinated. It is no secret that many of the CUNY colleges' have been disorganized to the point students don't even have their college emails activated. At Queens College, many students have emailed numerous departments about these issues and have been met with SILENCE because these departments are overwhelmed by the sheer number of inquiries.
THE IMPACT OF THIS ACTION WILL BE FURTHER FINANCIAL TRAUMA. If you kick out students from hybrid courses many will lose scholarships, financial aid, access to McCaulay honors progam bc they are no longer full-time. Also, it doesn't make sense to eliminate tons of student debt this year through the CUNY DEBT FORGIVENESS PROGRAM to only contribute to it again through this unfair unenrollment process which would NOT REFUND STUDENTS to classes they've been unenrolled from.
We believe it's unfair for CUNY to be able to give out harsh and arguably exploitative penalties towards students for its own inability to be organized.
Thus, we demand the following to right this wrong:
An immediate STOP to the unenrollment planned Monday for students whose vaccination paperwork has not been submitted or processed until next semester when the colleges are more organized to effectively process the onslaught of students. Virtually allowing students to attend hybrid courses online.
IF these demands are not met, we a united collective of many students throughout many colleges will be forced to take further action until justice is won for students. We believe during a pandemic the policies of CUNY can't just continue like it's BUSINESS AS FUCKING USUAL.
