Prevent the end of Consumer Rights, fight for carrier-free devices

Prevent the end of Consumer Rights, fight for carrier-free devices
The Issue
As the importance of technology grows in our daily lives, it is ever more clear that unimpeded access to it is a fundamental human right. This includes all-encompassing elements of an individual's right to everything surrounding a device they wholly own. Carriers have been involved in manufacturer's affairs since the telephone's inception. Now that we have smartphones, this link can be disruptive on some devices, such as Samsung phones, where carriers hold bargaining power over every device, unlocked or not. To the Federal Trade Commission, it is time that rules are put in place to limit a carrier's ability to interfere with unlocked devices that are wholly owned by a consumer. Carriers hold all of the bargaining power, and that must be taken away.
- Carriers should not be allowed to pre-install applications on unlocked devices (non-contracted).
- Carriers should not be allowed to limit the features of devices if a) their network supports it b) the device is unlocked/locked.
- Carriers should not be allowed to limit updates to devices, this must 100% fall under the control of manufacturers.
While some manufacturers, like Apple, have escaped the collective bargaining present under carriers, others have not. This only hurts the consumer. For a more free-market and for consumer rights, we must act.
