Gambling by Any Other Name: promote online gaming lockbox accountability and transparency

The Issue

Lockboxes are a deeply controversial and universally reviled monetization model in online gaming. Through the use of artificial scarcity, easy entry and the thrilling high of a rare payout, lockboxes are an under-legislated form of online gambling that prey on the drives of gamers. Lockboxes exploit those with poorer impulse control, such as children and people susceptible to gambling addictions.

US legislation and regulations on online gambling and the gaming industry are outdated and need revision, and there is a systematic failure to self regulate and develop ethical standards in the gaming industry.

Please support enacting legislation that would give lockboxes transparency, oversight, and regulation, forcing gaming companies to disclose odds and prevent the sale of lockboxes to underaged audiences.
