Stop Genital Mutilation

Genital mutilation of females is illegal in Australia. In 2014 the penalty for this crime has been increased from 7 to 21 years' jail.
Regrettably, too little attention has been focused on the fact that mutilation of baby boys is still a widespread practice under the guise of religions. Article19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that "children have the right to be protected from being hurt or mistreated, physically or mentally. Government should ensure that children are ...protected from violence, abuse and neglect by their parents".
Australia's obligations under the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 and as a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of the Child require the national and state governments to treat males and females equally and without discrimination on the basis of sex, and to take actions to eradicate traditional practices harmful to children.
As a concerned, suffering grandfather I plead for the urgent change of laws to outlaw this barbaric practice.
