Sarah Myers started this petition to Federal Government and

1 in 5 US adults suffer from mental illness in a given year, and suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among youth (NAMI, 2019).

Mental Illness is extremely prevalent within our society, but so overlooked & surrounded with stigma. Although the mind is a part of the body, for some reason physical health is seen as more significant to society & insurance companies.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) of 2008, was an attempt to change the idea of healthcare, as well as an effort to improve insurance coverage for mental health & substance use disorders. Ideally, to have these disorders treated the same as any physical disorder because mental health & substance use disorders are, in fact, medical problems.

Although the creation of this act was a step forward, we still have ways to go. This act poses shortcomings such as limited behavioral healthcare services offered within provider networks, inconsistency in how health plans utilize management & how they define medical necessity, & low reimbursement to behavioral healthcare providers.

This petition is to create awareness that mental health is in fact, just as important as physical health & should be treated equally. Please sign, & share this petition to spread the word about this issue as not only a way of helping others but YOURSELF!

Because when it comes down to it, without the mind..what would the body be?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read/share/sign, you are appreciated!
