Cancel the $500million plebiscite and have a free vote on Same Sex Marriage

The issue

The Liberal Government under Tony Abbott proposed a plebiscite for the people to vote on Same Sex Marriage. This was purely a delaying tactic. Despite offering the people a vote on the issue, several politicians have already stated they will vote against Same Sex Marriage even if the plebiscite comes out in favour. This completely ridicules democracy and the purpose of the plebiscite.

A Price Waterhouse paper shows that the plebiscite could cost this country $500 million (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-03-14/same-sex-marriage-plebiscite-could-cost-$525/7243710 In a time when budget deficits are a problem recognised by all parties, can we afford to waste this sort of money?

The plebiscite may also give rise to the opportunity of some people to use the opportunity to vilify and denigrate members of the LGBTI community. This is against the law but may be permitted by right of free speech.  The LGBTI community has a risk of suicide up to 14 times higher than the general community (http://suicidepreventionaust.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/SPA-GayLesbian-PositionStatement.pdf This entire manner of dealing with this issue can only compound the matter.

Let's send a very clear message to our government that we don't want a plebiscite that wastes money and can possibly vilify and harm a section of our community.  Let the people's voice be clearly heard as it already has so many times in opinion polls and change the legislation to permit Same Sex Marriage. Put the matter to Parliament and give all members a free vote on the issue.
