The Issue

I am a new mum, and my nine-month-old son, Freddie, recently experienced a febrile seizure triggered by a high temperature. Before this happened, we had never been given any information about febrile seizures or what to do if our baby experienced one.

Watching Freddie have a seizure was one of the most terrifying moments of our lives. We did not know what was happening, how to keep him safe or whether he was going to be okay. Although febrile seizures are relatively common in young children and are usually not harmful, they can be extremely frightening for parents and carers who are completely unprepared.

I believe every parent and carer should receive clear information about febrile seizures, including the signs to look out for, what to do during a seizure, when to call 999 and how to care for a child afterwards. This guidance could be provided through maternity services, health visitors, vaccination appointments and children’s health records.

This petition calls for febrile seizure awareness and first-aid guidance to become a routine part of the health information given to parents and carers. Being informed may not prevent a seizure, but it could help families respond safely and feel less frightened if one happens.

Please sign and share this petition to help ensure that no parent has to face this terrifying experience without knowing what to do.
