FDA: Mandate Clear Labels Warning of Alcohol-Linked Cancer Deaths

The Issue

A new study shows alcohol-related cancer deaths have doubled in recent years — and the public still isn’t being told the full truth.

Despite clear evidence linking alcohol to multiple forms of cancer — including breast, liver, colorectal, and esophageal — there are still no federally required cancer warning labels, and the alcohol industry continues to market heavily, often downplaying health risks.

It’s time for federal regulators to act.

We call on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to mandate clear warning labels on all alcoholic beverages stating the link between alcohol and cancer

Also:

  • Prohibit misleading marketing terms like “clean,” “natural,” or “low-risk” unless medically verified
  • Expand oversight of alcohol advertising — especially ads targeting youth, women, and other vulnerable groups
  • Launch a federal public awareness campaign about alcohol’s role in cancer risk

This is not about prohibition. It’s about truth, transparency, and protecting public health.

The science is clear. The deaths are rising.
And the U.S. government must not remain silent while industry profits from misinformation.
