This new report, just published yesterday, is a great resource for those with sesame allergies. It details which major companies label for sesame allergies (even though not required by law yet) and which do not. It also cites some surprising sources of sesame, like Brach's candy corn, California Pizza Kitchen pizza dough, some vegetable oils, some vitamin E, and some lotions or band aids. It also lists some uncommon alternate names for sesame (scientific names, names in other languages, etc.) that might be found on food labels.
Major brands, like Kellogg's, Heinz, Con Agra, Nestle, Campbell's, etc., will not tell you if any of their products contain dangerous allergens like sesame, even if you call them to ask. In case you're wondering, no, you cannot tell from reading the ingredient label. Most food labels contain catch-all phrases like "and other spices", "natural ingredients" or "natural flavors". Sesame oil is often one of these undisclosed "natural" ingredients or "spices", but there is no way to know. When you call the company, they refuse to answer, either because they do not know, or because they claim that their recipes are proprietary trade secrets. This is allowed because sesame disclosure is not regulated like it is for nuts, even though 500,000 people in the US are allergic to sesame, and it can be deadly.
I would say it's shocking that these major food companies refuse to disclose whether or not a deadly allergen like sesame is in their "secret recipes" - but it's not shocking to us because our families live with this every day. But for the layman out there unaware of this issue, this report should be shocking and eye opening. Maybe this will help non-allergy parents realize why we've been so vocal on this issue! Feel free to share! ;)

This report is also getting some great press, which is increasing the pressure on the FDA to listen to our petition to regulate sesame (and other seed) disclosures. Here are some examples of the press:

Also, here are a couple links to great Facebook groups, which are good resources if you have sesame seed or other seed allergies:

This all started with your help, so thank you! You are receiving this email because you signed my petition to the FDA to require sesame and other seed allergen disclosures. Our petition now has over 7,000 signatures! But more importantly, it has led to all this press, this report (which I helped work on with CSPI) and lots of pressure on the FDA. We are also urging allergists all over the country to send letters of support to the FDA, and have gotten several prominent allergists to voice their support.
I'm confident we will ultimately win on this issue (eventually), even if the FDA is slow moving and bureaucratic.
Thanks again for your support, and I hope you find these resources helpful.
Best
