Change Edison's Dress Code

Change Edison's Dress Code

The Issue

With the reopening of FCPS schools brings lots of things that have been missing from our students' lives for the past year and a half. One of the most prominent issues that has risen is the dress code being enforced here at Edison. The Students Rights and Responsibilities guidelines states that students may not wear clothing revealing their private parts, or showing an excessive amount of skin. The student body has come to realize that the staff here at Edison has been taking advantage of the latter. The students that have been dress coded, have also been primarily female, which is quickly exposing the misogynistic tendencies present here at Edison. Young girls are being dress coded several times a day, everyday for showing just a bit of midriff, or for having a slightly deep v-necked t-shirt.

Ideally, dress coding students should prevent distraction to other students at the school, but in practice, it does nothing more than inconvenience and humiliate the student in “violation.” The student body at Edison has concurred that they do not believe the staff has any right to choose one student's education over another’s. If one student is distracted by another student’s appearance, then steps should be taken to assist that student in remaining focused during their classes, as well as showing respect towards their classmates.

If the teachers or administrators at Edison are becoming distracted by their student’s appearance, then it should not be the responsibility of the student to avoid being sexualized by the adults employed at the school.

After reading the opinions of the student body here at Edison, we kindly request you to consider the following; please allow our students to wear what they deem appropriate and what they feel comfortable wearing to school. Of course, there is a line that must be drawn, and we, as students, know that, but the standard currently being set by the staff at Edison shows the school’s disrespect towards its female students.

We thank you for your time and consideration, we simply ask for your respect.
