As of now, the last day of high school for Frederick County Public Schools Class of 2021 is Tuesday, May 25. This is a Cohort A day, meaning only about half of the senior class will be in-person. It has been brought up that many seniors want to be able to attend their last day of high school in their school building, but school officials have stated that this is not currently an option due to COVID protocols.

With a little over a month left, there is plenty of time to figure out a solution to allow for all seniors to be in the building for their last day of school. The CDC has revised physical distancing recommendations to reflect at least 3 feet (instead of 6 feet) between students in classrooms, and removed the recommendation for physical barriers. In addition to this, as of April 12, every Maryland citizen over the age of 16 is eligible to get vaccinated.

One solution would be to have only the Class of 2021 attend in-person classes on Tuesday, May 25. This would not change the amount of students in the building, and COVID safety guidelines (social distancing and wearing masks) would still be in place.

Everyone can agree that this school year has been challenging, and all students have had to give up a lot. Our seniors deserve to finish high school as normal as possible - in their school building with the rest of their class.
