Are you familiar with the Nutribun? The bun similar to pandesal, initiated by the USAID Food for Peace Program, and was popularized during the Marcos years when schoolchildren were being given a big piece of the bun for breakfast to fight malnutrition. Its combat with malnutrition during the 70's successfully reduced the percentage of malnourished children. However, its production was phased out after the 1986 EDSA Revolution. The proportion of malnourished preschool children grew again, and up until now, had no changes to the issue similar to Nutribun's success. Ever since then, 95 child deaths in our country everyday are due to malnutrition, and majority of Filipino children suffer from micro-nutrient deficiency.

The World Health Organization(WHO) defines good nutrition as the adequate, well-balanced intake of food in relation to the body's dietary needs. The Nutribun provided about one-third of the recommended dietary allowance for school-age children for energy and protein. It is also rich in micro nutrients like calcium, iron, and B-complex vitamins. Each bun weighs 80 grams and contains 400 calories, which make it enough for the needed nutrient amount of children. With its comeback, it could somehow decrease malnutrition again like how it largely decreased the percentage of malnourished children during the 70's.

The bun shall be made again in local bakeries and distributed among targeted schools and feeding centers not only in Metro Manila, but also in some parts of the Philippines where malnutrition is high. It shall be given free in schools, and costs cheap outside. Thus, everyone can have the bun and will somehow lessen the hunger.
