I am so grateful to have had a direct conversation with Farm Boy CEO Jeff York earlier this week. I told him about this petition and how all 5000+ of you are so concerned about excessive plastic packaging in grocery stores and want to see big changes at Farm Boy! We talked about a number of our specific petition requests and I will follow up with him further and keep you updated.
Many of you have noticed small but significant changes at your local Farm Boy stores over the past months (loose produce in small brown paper bags instead of plastic, fewer plastic clam-shells, less plastic packaging in the bakery section, ready-to-eat chickens in a mostly compostable bag). Mr. York assured me that there are many more changes coming to Farm Boy stores in the near future. Thank you Farm Boy!
And sure enough, just today Farm Boy released advertisements promoting their new branded reusable produce bags!
In addition to using reusable produce bags at Farm Boy (and other stores) and giving them lots of positive feedback about these changes, one way to help shift the industry further and faster is to sign petitions directed at other major Canadian grocery chains. If you haven't done so yet, consider signing these two in particular (see below), and also email your feedback and requests for less plastic packaging directly to other chains you shop like Metro, Loblaws, Walmart and Costco.
