Thank you for your support of this petition - you have all helped to raise awareness about excessive plastic packaging at Farm Boy stores and Canadian grocery stores in general. After obtaining over 5000 signatures, we have been able to convey the concerns raised in this petition directly to Farm Boy CEO Jeff York over a detailed phone call and follow-up email exchanges. Many of you have started noticing small changes at your local stores. In addition to our last update highlighting the new reusable produce bags at Farm Boy, we have been assured there are MORE changes coming.
Mr. York has stated:
"we are committed to reducing single use plastic and doing the right thing for the environment.
You should have seen the changes in our bakery packaging recently and we are working on many more.
We will be doing this on our timeline so that we balance food safety, cost and customer experience."
He also explains:
"We are offering paper bags at the check out and are in the process of setting up sections to promote alternatives to plastic bags.
We are expecting the government to do their job and issue a law on plastic bag usage."
Although Farm Boy still has a long way to go, we are appreciative that Mr. York has been receptive to our concerns. We believe that this petition has made it clear to Farm Boy that their customers expect them to be true leaders in sustainability and to make real changes in their stores to reduce excessive plastic packaging.
Let's all commit to holding Farm Boy accountable and providing them with regular feedback, as they implement the changes they have coming to decrease single-use plastics.
Please continue to speak to the staff and store managers when you shop and see excessive packaging or areas for improvement! Regularly write to Farm Boy with a quick comment about positive changes or concerns about single-use plastics in the store! Lastly, it is election season, so don't forget to urge your local candidates to support a national ban on single-use plastics and have a REAL plan to fight climate change.
Sincerely,
Eugenie, Marie-Eve and Jos
