In May of 2014, the New Mexico Department of Corrections ended a 30 year program dedicated to the building, strengthening, and maintaining of family bonds between state inmates and members of their immediate family.  The decision was based on the opinion that there are no significant benefits to maintaining family bonds achieved by participating in the Family Visit program.  The many families who have for years relied upon these visits as the foundation for their family structure could not disagree more and are now paying a heavy price.  Cabinet Secretary Gregg Marcantel has the ability to reinstate these visits which are so important to many families in New Mexico, and which are still authorized under state law N.M.S.A. 33-2-12.1.

We, the undersigned, petition Cabinet Secretary Gregg Marcantel to reconsider his position and end any further estrangement of these families.

En Mayo de 2014, el departamento de correcciones de Nuevo México terminó con un programa de 30 años dedicado al establecimiento, mantenimiento, y fortalecimiento de los lazos familiares entre los presos del Estado y sus parientes más cercanos.  La decisión fue basada en la opinión de que no hay beneficios sustantivos al mantenimiento de los lazos familiares logrado por participar en el Programa de Visita Familiar.  Muchas familias, quienes por años han podido contar con estas visitas como la base de su estructura familiar no están de acuerdo y ahora se encuentran pagando un precio muy alto. El secretario del gabinete estatal, Gregg Marcantel, tiene el poder de reestablecer estas visitas, las cuales son importantísimas para muchas familias de Nuevo México, y también son aún autorizadas por la ley estatal N.M.S.A. 33-2-12.1.

Nosotros, los firmados aquí, peticionamos al secretario del gabinete estatal, Gregg Marcantel, que reconsidere su postura en este asunto y que acabe con más distanciamiento entre las familias aquí afectadas.
