Fire the officers who killed Natasha McKenna

Fire the officers who killed Natasha McKenna

The Issue

Natasha McKenna, a 37-year old mother and Alexandria resident who struggled with mental illness, was taken to Fairfax Adult Detention Center in late January 2015 to await transport to Alexandria for an outstanding warrant. On February 3, after days in solitary confinement, six deputies attempted to transport McKenna, who was in medical crisis, to Alexandria. A video released weeks ago exposed the inhumane treatment Natasha McKenna suffered in that altercation. Naked and disoriented, Natasha McKenna was wrestled to the ground by several deputies in biohazard suits and riot gear and a bag was placed over her head. Her final words were, “You promised you wouldn’t kill me.” She was shackled and breathing heavily when she was tased four separate times at 50,000 volts. By the time she was wheeled to a vehicle for transport, she was unresponsive. She died five days later. To date, no charges have been filed against the six officers directly involved in killing Natasha McKenna. Fairfax County Police Department investigated the actions taken by the Sheriff’s officers that day and determined that McKenna’s death was “accidental.” The Commonwealth’s Attorney, Ray Morrogh, made the same determination and declined to press charges against the officers despite overwhelming evidence that this was a premeditated attack. The officers involved are still on the job despite presiding Sheriff Stacey Kincaid’s statement that “this tragic incident has been engraved in my mind since the day it occurred. It’s my responsibility as your Sheriff to make sure something like this never happens again.” Sheriff’s comments at the top of the released video of Natasha McKenna’s killing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVs8B2Nmo5k&feature=youtu.be This petition demands that Sheriff Stacey Kincaid do more than express regret. She should fire the six officers that killed Natasha McKenna. The names of those officers are: • Lieutenant Paul Miller • Lieutenant Lucas Salzman (who used the Taser) • Deputy Adam Henry • Deputy Kenneth Krstulovic • Deputy Patrick McPartlin • Deputy Jonathan Perryman The Sheriff and other county officials may maintain that these officers committed no crime (a judgment we absolutely dispute). The very least they can do is make sure that these men no longer have the power to abuse prisoners like McKenna. Please sign below and share this widely. We demand justice for Natasha McKenna.
