Ban the use of Pyrethrins & Pyrethroids for spraying/fogging to kill insects Int. AK.

The Issue

Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids are being used in the Interior of Alaska to kill mosquitos. Our mosquitos do not carry Zika or the West Nile Virus. They are an inconvenience & we have multiple other ways to deal with them.

Pyrethrins & Pyrethroids used by mosquito & insect spray companies are not only killing mosquitos but also beneficial insects, including honey bees kept by local beekeepers, dragonflies, butterflies & other pollinators. Local residents have also seen effects on birds & aquatic life. These chemicals are toxic to humans as well. Mosquito spray companies say that their chemicals are safe for bees & humans, but they are not. All pesticides are poisonous to not only insects but to birds, fish, & mammals.

Chemicals used by these companies include: bifenthrin, deltamethrin, permethrin, D-allethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin & cyfluthrin. These chemicals can last up to two weeks after spraying. Research has linked these chemicals to honey bee deaths, aquatic life deaths, & in humans: ADHD, autism, respiratory problems, skin irritations, nervous system damage, convulsions, tremors, bloody nasal discharge, numbness, liver & thyroid problems, immune & endocrine system disruption, promotion of tumor growth in cancers of reproductive organs including breast & prostrate, long term neurological health problems, headaches, dizziness, nausea, mental confusion, disorientation, seizures, coma, & death. These effects may not be apparent until months or years after exposure. These effects are well documented in peer reviewed literature. Literature for this information is posted in the Interior Alaska Beekeepers FBForum.
