Stop the Proposed Removal of Painting and Decorating Licences – Urgent Action Required

Master Painters Australia NSW Association Inc is the peak industry body for the Painting and Decorating Industry in NSW. We are extremely concerned that NSW Fair Trading is considering removing the Painting and Decorating licence. There are also other trades under threat.

The proposed changes means that Painters and Decorators will no longer need to be licenced.  No longer will consumers have the assurances that comes with using a licenced Painter and Decorator. A licenced Painter and Decorator has the knowledge, the skills and the technical training required to apply the right products in a variety of situations. Technical knowledge adds significant value to the quality and  warranty of work undertaken.

The integrity of the warranty is based on the competence of the Painter and Decorator and also the Industry knowledge and experience, which is recognised under the current licencing system.

The issues of lead and asbestos are also of great concern, to be a competent tradesperson working with lead and asbestos, you must have industry experience and knowledge to understand and mitigate the dangers.

A licenced painter and decorator is recognised as competent in ALL aspects of the industry including hazardous substances such as lead and asbestos. Unlicenced workers cannot prove they are competent in the industry. Unlicenced workers may not recognise the dangers of lead and asbestos and their work practices may endanger the consumer, the environment and the community at large.

These proposed changes could wreak havoc on the homes of so many Australians. This change cannot be allowed to happen.

Master Painters will be drafting a submission on behalf of the industry.
