My family member, like many others in Brea, California, is an educator. As a concerned family member, I am reaching out to you to support our petition urging the Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) to reconsider their stance on teacher salaries.

We understand the challenges posed by the state budget, but it should not serve as a pretext to undervalue the pivotal role our teachers play. BOUSD have presented with county salary comparisons that underscore the significant wage disparity, emphasizing the urgency for a fair and equitable solution.

To provide context, we have conducted extensive research comparing teacher salaries in the Brea Olinda Unified School District with those in a 50-mile radius. The results are disheartening, revealing a stark contrast that further highlights the need for urgent action. Our teachers in Brea Olinda Unified School District earn ~25% lesser than other school districts like Ontario-Montclair School District, Fullerton School District or LOS ALAMITOS Unified School District. We are not asking for exorbitant raises; they are simply requesting a minimum wage increase of 25%, a modest yet crucial adjustment that aligns more closely with the economic realities and inflation rates affecting our community. For context, mortgage payments has gone up by almost 55% in past 2 years. The over all living expense has increased by nearly 15-17%. This is unsustainable for the teachers with BOUSD's proposed raise of 2.25% to an already lower salary.

Report published on December 13, 2022 by Edweek.org points out that 16.8 percent of public school teachers held a second job outside the school system in addition to Teachers working an average of 52 hours a week. Our educators deserve recognition and compensation that reflects their immeasurable contributions to our society. They are not just teachers; they are mentors, role models, and inspirations to our children. Let us stand united in urging the BOUSD to prioritize our teachers, invest in the future of our community, and ensure fair compensation that befits their invaluable role in shaping the next generation.
