Fair Reassessment of Gravois Park Property Values

The Issue

In the past year, my property taxes unexpectedly increased by $1,000, which is a dramatic change from the $250 to $450 range I have experienced in my 16 years of living in the Gravois Park neighborhood of St. Louis. This sudden spike in property taxes has placed an unexpected financial burden on not only myself, but many others who call Gravois Park home.

The Gravois Park neighborhood has seen a long history of stable property values. However, in recent assessments by the City of St. Louis, many homeowners have noticed an unjustified increase in property taxes, reflecting property values that do not align with the reality of our neighborhood. These inflated assessments are inconsistent with the traditional levels observed over the past decade and a half, leading to undue financial distress for residents.

Such financial burdens can have severe implications on the community. Long-standing residents, including retirees and families with fixed incomes, are being forced to reconsider their ability to afford to stay in their homes. This not only disrupts the community fabric but also threatens to displace residents who have invested years in nurturing the neighborhood.

We demand that the City of St. Louis undertake a thorough and fair reassessment of the property values in Gravois Park. The purpose of this reassessment should be to align the evaluations with the historical averages reflective of this community over the last 16 years. By doing this, the city will not only ensure equitable treatment for all residents but also prevent the unnecessary destabilization of our neighborhood demographics.

Additionally, this reevaluation process should include community involvement and transparency to ensure that all voices are heard in determining fair property values. The city must recognize the unique characteristics and economic realities of Gravois Park to maintain its vibrant and diverse community.

I urge the City of St. Louis to address this issue promptly and take the necessary steps to resolve it. Sign this petition to support the fair reassessment of property values in Gravois Park, and help protect the financial stability and future of our neighborhood.
