Fair Punch-In and Punch-Out Procedures
Fair Punch-In and Punch-Out Procedures
The Issue
We, the undersigned Air Canada employees, are requesting a fair and practical solution to ongoing delays caused by unavailable or out-of-service employee punch clocks.
When several punch clocks are out of service, employees are frequently required to wait in line simply to record the beginning or end of their shifts. Employees should not be considered late because they were waiting to access an employer-provided time clock, nor should employees routinely have to remain at the workplace after their scheduled shift has ended while waiting to punch out.
Even a delay of only a few minutes can have real consequences. Employees may be recorded as late despite arriving at the workplace on time, and employees finishing their shifts may miss trains, buses, or other transportation because they are required to wait for an available punch clock.
We are requesting that Air Canada implement the following:
1. A 5-minute grace period for punch-in and punch-out when punch-clock availability is limited by malfunctioning or insufficient machines.
2. Employees who are physically present and waiting to punch in should not be penalized for lateness caused by a lineup at the punch clocks.
3. Employees waiting to punch out at the end of their scheduled shift should not be required to absorb delays created by unavailable punch clocks.
4. Air Canada should maintain a sufficient number of functioning punch clocks for the number of employees using them during shift-change periods.
This request is not intended to excuse employees from reporting to work on time. It is intended to ensure that employees are not penalized, inconvenienced, or required to remain at work longer because of problems with the employer's timekeeping equipment.
A reliable timekeeping system benefits both employees and Air Canada. When the system cannot process employees promptly, the consequences should not fall on employees.
We respectfully request that Air Canada and our union review the current punch-clock situation and establish a fair five-minute clock-congestion policy.
