Fair Housing Targets in Wiltshire
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Wiltshire, are concerned that high, centrally imposed housing targets—combined with the absence of an adopted Local Plan—are driving speculative, developer‑led proposals across our county. This is resulting in the loss of green spaces, harm to biodiversity and the erosion of the character of Wiltshire’s towns and villages.
In my village of Hilperton alone, four speculative sites proposing around 2,000 homes are being promoted on open countryside, despite Trowbridge having multiple brownfield areas in need of regeneration. Similar patterns are emerging across Wiltshire while residents wait until 2029 for the Local Plan.
We believe homes must be delivered alongside roads, schools, healthcare, public transport, regeneration, community facilities and local employment opportunities.
We call on Wiltshire Council to hold a Full Council debate and to press central government for a fairer, evidence‑based approach to housing numbers that prioritises brownfield regeneration, community and countryside preservation, infrastructure investment and sustainable, locally informed growth.
