Fair Fare Policies for London Airports: End the Oyster Card Trap!

Fair Fare Policies for London Airports: End the Oyster Card Trap!

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call for a fundamental change in the fare policies concerning London airports, specifically Stansted (STN), Luton (LTN) and Southend (SEN). STN and LTN, consistently ranked among the top busiest in the UK, serve millions of passengers each month, a significant portion of whom are London residents or UK-based travelers. Despite being classified as part of London by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), passengers face unjust penalties and inconvenience due to flawed ticketing systems.

The issue lies in the discrepancy between the convenience of London's Oyster card system and the punitive measures imposed on passengers traveling to and from these airports. While Londoners rely on Oyster for daily transportation, enjoying security, ease of use, and National Rail discounts, they encounter unexpected hurdles when attempting to use it for airport travel. Passengers can start their journey with Oyster but are forced to purchase new tickets upon reaching the airport, in addition to facing hefty penalty fares of at least £100 (£50 if paid within 21 days), along with the incomplete journey charge on their Oyster cards.

This practice is unjust and burdensome. Londoners should not be penalized for utilizing the same transport system they depend on for their daily commute, specially if they had a clear intention of paying for it. It is particularly egregious that station staff are tasked with enforcing these penalties, knowing full well the confusion and frustration it causes passengers.

We demand fair fare policies that prioritize the rights and convenience of passengers. The current system, which relies on penalties for revenue, is unacceptable. Transportation providers like Stansted Express must not profit from the confusion and inconvenience faced by passengers. Instead, agreements should be revised to ensure seamless integration with London's existing transport infrastructure, including fair treatment for Oyster card users.

By signing this petition, we urge authorities and transportation agencies to take immediate action to rectify this injustice. Londoners and travelers alike deserve fair and equitable access to airport transport without fear of arbitrary penalties. Let's end the Oyster card trap and make airport travel fair for all!
