FAILURE: Holding Seattle Mariners Ownership Accountable

The Issue

Purpose of This Petition
The purpose of this petition is to call out the Front Office and Ownership group of the Seattle Mariners for their commitment to perpetual failure.

The Mariners are good at two things: making money and losing baseball games. The team is a widely cherished cornerstone of the local community that has transformed itself into a corporate vampire who has extracted every dollar it can from the city and fans that have given so much to it.

It was our tax dollars that paid for that stadium. It was our tax dollars that just allocated $135 million for infrastructure improvements. What do we get in return? We get embarrassed. We get perpetual failure. We get a losing baseball team.

History of Failure

  • The Mariners have a lifetime record of less than .500 (.472)
  • The Mariners currently have a streak of 21 consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance (longest in ANY professional sport)
  • The Mariners currently have a streak of 20 years without consecutive winning seasons
  • The Mariners have 0 Pennants and 0 World Series Appearances

For crying out loud, the Mariners franchise has experienced more ruptured testicles (5) than they have playoff appearances (4) and the playoff drought is now old enough to buy a drink at the bar!

Call to Action
To John Stanton, Chris Larson, Howard Lincoln, Ken Griffey Jr., and the rest of the Ownership group:

It is time to change the culture around the Seattle Mariners. The stench around this franchise reeks of mediocrity. It is time to establish a culture of winning. It is time to clean house in the front office and bring in a group with a ruthless and unwavering commitment to winning.

Why Now?
President of Baseball Operations and General Manager of the Seattle Mariners will be the most attractive job openings in all of baseball. The team has a top 5 farm system, franchise cornerstones at several positions and unlimited payroll flexibility.

Jerry Dipoto has done a lot to put this team in a position to succeed. We sincerely thank him for that. But he is not the right guy to take this team to the next level. He has spent 12 seasons as a General Manager and only made the playoffs in one of them. He is on record calling the 2022 Mariners a playoff team with depth – that is laughable. It is time to build on what we have now and move forward.

John Stanton, this city is desperate for a winning product on the field. You are in the position to do what is necessary and hire a President of Baseball Operations and General Manager with an unwavering commitment to winning. Bring in someone like Theo Epstein and let him hire a General Manager of his choice.

The stench around this franchise is that of mediocrity. You owe it to your sponsors, your families, yourselves and most importantly, to your community to change that. The legacy you are leaving behind is one of failure.

It is time to take the next step. We want to win, NOW!
