DC Prepares for More Bike Lanes as Fear and Confusion Mount on DC Streets
Thank you all for our progress. Please ask someone to sign. Here's the news.
The long-awaited report on the Strategic 5-year Bike Plan is out and it’s a sham. Acknowledging on every page that the major criticism of the DC bike program is that DC is not engaging with neighborhood communities, the report is replete with data, charts, diagrams, calculations, and photographs to prove otherwise. For a year, DDOT held a series of public meetings, collected 3000 comments and prepared the report. Under the direction of Greg Billing, former executive director at the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA), the report is contrived to provide justification for more bike lanes. It purports to answer the questions, what can we do to make bikers safer and promote more bike lanes? Meanwhile, pedestrians, seniors, drivers, and the disabled regard DC streets increasingly with fear and confusion. Their concerns are ignored in this report.

The Trump administration announced in July a decision to stop federal funding of bike lanes. Since then, DDOT Director Sharon Kerschbaum said DC will pay for them. This month in public meetings organized by the presumptive next Mayor, Janeese Lewis George, who is on record favoring more bike lanes, residents have been outspoken in their opposition to the unsafe consequences of DC bike lanes.
It’s time to bring safety back to the streets. DC Safe Streets Coalition is petitioning for the regulation of e-bikes and scooters, which DC promotes and subsidizes with bike lanes, rebates and pilot projects. Regulation would include registration and tags, so bikers can be held accountable. Please sign the petition and help us get the attention of the Mayor and the DC Council. https://c.org/GVFzcRN8kP
