Tighten and enforce restrictions on pornography!
The Issue
Like many parents, I expected that the "community standards" imposed by Facebook would provide some protection against children being exposed to pornography. I've learned however, that's not the case. More often then not, posts, pages, and groups that are reported for pornography are not removed, and somehow deemed to not be in violation of Facebook's community standards. The standard suggestion made by Facebook is to simply "block" those images, pages, links, etc. but that still lets them remain for other children to stumble across. Often, the pages and groups posting porn have innocent names that wouldn't raise red flags for parents. For example: Recently, I and several others have reported an OPEN group with the very misleading name of "Funny book" for the page being full of not only nudity, but photographs and video links (with very graphic display images) that involve rape, inscest, pedophilia, and bestiality. Facebook has said that this and similar pages DO NOT VIOLATE COMMUNITY STANDARDS. Facebook is open to children starting at the age of 13, and quite often children join at younger ages by simply entering a false birthdate. There are countless pages and groups that post pornography, from milder "nearly naked" pictures to outright hardcore graphic sex, yet the reports of these things seem to fall on deaf ears.
At one point, innocent family photos of breastfeeding mothers and photos of breast cancer survivors were ridiculously deemed "innappropriate" and removed readily...while literal porn was left for anyone on facebook to access. This is not examples of art, and it's not an example of "free speech". This is pornography on a public social media platform open to children. Something has to be done. Most parents would think their children would be somewhat protected on a site where children are allowed, and where a "community standard" is imposed, but sadly that's not the case.
I believe that while it's perfectly acceptable for for preteens to want to take part in social media, it's not acceptable for them to be exposed to pornography in any form. I feel that regulations should be stricter when it comes to what children may be exposed to and reports of pornography should be taken seriously when it comes to a public social forum. I am asking parents, grandparents, and every concerned adult to speak up in defense of protecting children and keeping Facebook safe for everyone. There is no shortage of websites available for those adults who choose to view porn, and facebook shouldn't be one of them. Help me speak out against this gross negligence and disregard. Please sign and add your voice to ask Facebook to tighten their restrictions, enforce those restrictions, and seriously review reports made.
