Tell Facebook to donate proceeds from profile picture filters to charity
The Issue
What does solidarity mean to you? Facebook has been one of our generation's greatest resources for creating an international sense of community and solidarity. The most recent feature for this purpose is the profile picture filter. Facebook's French flag filter option, for instance, was immensely popular after the ISIS Paris attack on November 13th, 2015. It was a great way to raise awareness and show support, but critics have argued that it actually provides no material help to the cause. It's a classic case of "slacktivism" (slacker activism) - people can pat themselves on the back for "showing support" with minimal effort and without material contributions.
Here at Change.org, we want to think BIGGER and make an actual difference.
Here's how: Facebook should charge just $1 for the use of the filters it offers (because, as of now, they're free). This will show what causes you stand for and that you've *actually* contributed to them. You would also be able to place a badge on the filter depending on how much you've contributed – for example, a $10 donation would give you a silver badge, a $20 donation would give you a gold badge, a $50 donation would give you a diamond badge, and so on. Facebook would then adhere to a promise of donating the proceeds to the cause they're promoting.
We live in an age where technology is mobilizing record-breaking numbers of people. We can't let Facebook stand idle when it has the perfect scaffolding to make a real difference when we all work together. $1 may sound small, but Facebook has over 1.5 BILLION active users and therein lies our hope. Please join us in signing this petition to have Facebook use its filter feature to do some REAL good.
Sincerely,
Andrew J. Garcia and Robert J. Garcia, California
