Mike Morrell started this petition to Facebook

Roger Wolsey, the author of Kissing Fish: Christianity for People who don’t like Christianity—a book on progressive Christianity—has been an active part of the Facebook community since 2006. Roger is also the creator and administrator of the Kissing Fish Book Facebook page – a fan-page with over 300,000 followers.

At the end of September 2019, Facebook disabled Roger Wolsey’s personal Facebook page - as well as the Nature Church Global, and Centering Prayer Facebook pages that he runs.

For nearly all of these years, Roger, a Spiritual Director and United Methodist pastor, has served as the Director of the Wesley Foundation campus ministry at the University of Colorado in Boulder. His personal Facebook page has about 4,995 friends, and his Nature Church and Centering Prayer pages have solid followings.

Roger is unsure as to why Facebook discontinued his Facebook pages. He received form letter notices from FB providing a “menu” of various possible violations of FB policy he may have committed. What Roger thinks happened is that the Facebook robotic algorithm scanners may’ve wrongly assumed that something he wrote was engaging in “hate speech” – though Facebook hasn’t indicated that this is what happened. What is clear is that his account was put into a 3 day “suspension” where he couldn’t comment, like, or post for 3 days; and then, after that passed, when he turned what he had posted as a status update into a blog and then started posting it on Facebook, his FB pages “slowed down” and the number of people who FB allowed to see his posts (sent into their newsfeeds) went way down. And then, he received a notice saying that his Facebook account had been disabled.

None of his attempts to learn just what exactly he may’ve done to violate any specific FB policy have been answered. He’s just received form letters which lead us to think that no human eyes at Facebook have looked into this.

Roger’s “offending” (?) status update was a passionate plea to fellow straight, white, liberal men to “get over ourselves” and to “stop hating conservative men in the U.S.” and to instead extend olive branches and start seeking to be-friend them – as “it’s only through relationships/friendships that people really change” – and our polarized society needs change, evolution, and dropping the hatred – on all sides.

Two attorneys have tried to reach human beings at Facebook without success.

Hence, this petition. As Roger said, "Author Mike Morrell, one of the founders of the Wild Goose Festival, had a similar thing happen to him 10 years ago, and it was an online petition like this that led to Facebook re-enabling his account. We hope the same happens here."

Roger’s voice is the kind of voice we need more of on social media, not less.

Please sign your name here to let Facebook know you’d like to see Roger’s Facebook accounts re-activated. Thank you!

(If you're curious, here's a link to the blog post that we think led to all of this:
Tough Guys Need Friends — the original title was “Befriending Bigots”)

He wrote a follow-up piece that provides helpful ways for liberals to connect with conservatives – and visa versa, Ending the Civil War. Ways to Engage.

You can learn more about Roger at rogerwolsey.com

He’s currently working on a new book with the working title, Mystic Fires: fuel to enliven religious & non-religious hearts and souls.

p.s. Roger’s Kissing Fish Book fan-page on Facebook remains active because a friend, who lives in a different state, is an admin on the page and is able to post a few items each day to keep it up and running until Roger is re-activated.
