Give users the choice to disable the 'Thumbs Up' Button on Messenger

The Issue

This button has caused inconvenience for most of us using the Messenger app at some point. Located at the bottom of the screen, it is all too easy to mis-press when reading through messages or trying to type a new text message.

This is in some situations a minor annoyance and distraction as you may feel inclined to say that it was pressed unintentionally. You might mis-hit the button, become frustrated, explain it and then if that does not lead to a discussion of how annoying the button is, then you may have forgotten what you were actually going to send.

In some situations (i.e when talking about a serious topic) it is especially embarrassing for users to mis-hit the dreaded button.

The majority of times that I have pressed the button have been accidental, and almost always when I see someone send it it will be followed by a message along the lines of 'I hate that button'. Chances are that most of you who had enough free time to bother reading this can relate to some extent.

There are alternatives to the large 'thumbs up button', such as the smaller (y) button, and the much more popular emoticons. This makes the 'thumbs up button' even more of a useless annoyance.

While many people do like using the 'thumbs-up button' for fun value, I think that Facebook should offer users the choice to disable it for convenience if they choose to, making it so that they may re-able it if they do ever want to use it. An alternative option would be to move the button to a different part of the user interface, such as in the emoticons menu. This would make it much more difficult to mis-press the button while still allowing easy usage of it to all users.

So if, like me and countless others, you have been a victim of this wretched button's interference, then I implore you to sign this petition asking Facebook Incorporated to let users disable the thumbs-up button.
