Please remove the account, Jeff Jeffries, and similar dangerous hate speech.
The Issue
Please ask Facebook to remove:
Contrary to popular belief, the first amendment to the constitution only restricts Congress from passing laws against free speech. It does not force private individuals or companies to listen to all speech or allow it on their private property. Please sign if you believe that Facebook should not allow accusations against entire group based on prejudice.
The above meme and other hate speech from Jeff Jeffries' page were reported by Facebook members. Each time Facebook responded by saying that the post didn't violate Facebook's community standards. Facebook suggested blocking the "offensive" post and the person who posted it. "Offensive" implies that one can simply avoid it and the problem is solved. Hate speech is not offensive. It is dangerous.
Yelling "fire" in a crowded theater is dangerous and has never been protected by the first amendment. However, is it not also dangerous to whisper to someone "See those people over there...they are trying to burn down the theater?" This is exactly what Jeff Jeffries is doing.
Jeff Jeffries has thousands of people following his page which consists mostly of memes (illustrations superimposed with one or two lined text that people with limited reading comprehension will still understand.) He recklessly makes unproven, over generalized, or completely false accusations against entire groups of people claiming that "they" are destroying "us" and our way of life. Jeff Jeffries can't possibly know the mental health of every one of his followers. He does not know that one of them won't take action to protect what Jeff Jeffries convinced him/her is in danger.
Because of the irresponsibility of Jeff Jeffries and other Facebook members, we believe that Facebook should intervene. Facebook should remove the account Jeff Jeffries. We are also asking that Facebook amend its policy to include hate speech to its list of unacceptable content. Speech that makes unproven, explicit or implicit accusations against people based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual identity, etc. is hate speech and should not have a place on Facebook.
