Facebook Must Stop Disabling Authentic Accounts that Have Not Violated Community Standards
The Issue
Facebook has long used algorithms to control it's AI. A recent and disturbing trend since COVID-19 has been to use an automated process to disable accounts for "violating community standards" with apparently no human supervision.
In my case I had an eleven year old account that had been verified disabled after changing the phone number texts were sent to for two factor authentication. Facebook's AI then wanted to send a text to verify my identity to the old disabled number I no longer had access to. So I started a new account.
That account in turn was disabled a month later as I was in the process of verifying it for advertising. I was given no warnings either time. There was no indication I had violated Community Standards.
I am not alone. On Reddit, there are over 30 threads with hundreds if not thousands of similar stories. Many of these accounts are ten to twelve years old with ample evidence they are authentic accounts with no indication Community Standards had been violated.
Facebook is a repository of memories, old posts and photos over a decade old in some cases. It is so also the way people communicate with friends, family, and co-workers. Finally, for many small businesses it is a cheap way to advertise and compete with the big box stores.
I therefore ask Facebook to do away with automated disabling of accounts, and only disable accounts with the approval of a human being that has viewed the profile. Further, I ask Facebook hire more support staff working remotely to handle the run away AI that's banning people for no reason.
