Allow law enforcement officers and their immediate families to use pseudo names and/or name abbreviations for safety concerns.
The Issue
If you have watched the news recently you know that law enforcement officers and their families are being targeted by individuals and groups. These threats are real. There have been many officers attacked, shot and several killed while standing outside their homes. There are death threats put out on most officers families as soon as the officers name is mentioned in the news, whether his/her actions are justified or not. The FBI passes down threats to law enforcement agencies that they deem as credible on a regular basis. These are facts, whether they are well known by the public or not. We are being targeted because the media portrays ALL officers as being bad, dirty, crooked, etc. However, we are not all the same. Whether you "like" the police or not, no one deserves to be targeted due to their chosen profession. ALL LIVES MATTER, INCLUDING OURS.
Law enforcement officers are on Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends, just as Facebook intended. However, many officers and/or their families are not interested in being "found" by people that want to hurt us. We should be allowed to use Facebook without putting ourselves and our families in danger. Using our real names can potentially cost us our safety and possibly even our lives.
Forcing law enforcement officers to use their true identity is forcing some officers to not be able to keep in touch with family and friends via the largest social networking site to date.
Recently a group from San Francisco was allowed to not use their real names on Facebook because they felt their real names didn't reflect who they truly are. Well, we are asking for the same courtesy in order to protect ourselves and our families from people who want to hurt us.
We acknowledge that not all law enforcement officers or their families have a problem using their legal identities. However, if the need should arise, ie. the officers name being exploited by the media, he/she should have the option of changing their Facebook name rather then having to delete the entire account.
Please stop putting us in danger and allow us to protect our identities while using this great site that you have created for ALL people to enjoy, regardless of race, color, gender, national origin, age, religion, creed, disability, veteran's status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or PROFESSIONAL CAREER.
