On June 16, 2022 NYC Council Member Lincoln Restler (District 33) introduced legislation that would prohibit nonessential helicopters from operating at heliports owned or operated by New York City. Intro 551 bans tourist and commuter helicopter flights from the East 34th St. Heliport and Downtown Manhattan Heliport! Stop the Chop NY/NJ spoke at that press conference on the City Hall steps, and we support this great bill! See the bill here
Int 551-2022 already has the support of 23 NYC Council Members (please thank the cosponsors), but if you live in one of the districts BELOW your City Council Member IS NOT ON BOARD yet.
Please find your Council Member below, and call and email their offices asking them: "to cosponsor Int. 551 because:
NYC cannot continue contributing to the climate crisis by giving helipad access to fossil fuels-guzzling helicopter companies.
New Yorkers should not be forced to suffer from noise and air pollution so the privileged few can commute to the Hamptons or JFK/LGA by air, roaring low over the rest of us who bear those environmental, health and quality of life costs (especially environmental justice communities who already suffer disproportionately from health issues, such as asthma).
Just as bad are the tourist helicopter joyrides over our city - 60,000 takeoffs and landings alone from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport. Their tours of the NY Harbor and Hudson River are destroying our waterfront parks, waterways, Governors Island, tourist sights such as the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, and the quality of life and health for all those residing near the heliport or along their tour paths!"
