Seventeen years ago, the community of DePue, IL and Lake DePue were named Superfund sites by the Environmental Protection Agency due to the high levels of pollutants, such as zinc, lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and mercury. These contaminants were caused by the smelting of metals for the automotive and appliance industries, chiefly by companies ultimately owned by ExxonMobil and CBS/Viacom Corp. The village of DePue has yet to be cleaned up by parties responsible and the well-being of DePue’s residents and ecosystem is therefore in constant jeopardy.
