Extend the Canada Dental Care Plan to Cover Seniors Unable to Afford Private Plans

Extend the Canada Dental Care Plan to Cover Seniors Unable to Afford Private Plans
The Issue
I am a retiree who was fortunate enough to retain a pension dental plan from my previous employer, but now find myself in a dire predicament. Despite possessing this dental plan, I am unable to afford the lofty premiums and co-pays necessary for essential dental work. This issue is further compounded by the fact that my pension dental plan disqualifies me from accessing the benefits of the Canada Dental Care Plan. Despite being unable to afford my dental plan or the subsequent dental work, my status as a pensioner has rendered me ineligible for further assistance.
It is important to highlight that I am not the only senior in this regrettable situation. Many seniors across Canada are struggling with similar problems, to afford dental work even though they have a pension dental plan. According to Canadian Seniors' Health Care Statistics, over 800,000 seniors do not visit a dentist because they cannot afford it (Source: Health Canada). These seniors, like me, are unable to access adequate dental care due to their financial limitations, despite the pressing healthcare needs that escalate with age.
At present, the eligibility criteria for the Canada Dental Care Plan exclude those with private insurance cover. This blanket exclusion fails to take into account cases like ours where the private insurance is unaffordable and therefore ineffective. I propose that Health Canada revise its eligibility criteria for the Canada Dental Care Plan to accommodate seniors who, despite having private dental insurance, are unable to financially support their dental care needs.
Our dental health is crucial to our overall well-being, and no senior citizen should be made to neglect it due to financial constraints. We urge you to consider our plight and take immediate measures to rectify this oversight. Please extend the Canada Dental Care Plan to seniors who can't afford the premiums or co-pay for dental work under private plans. Your signature can make a difference in ensuring much-needed dental benefits for seniors in distress. Sign today.
