Extend the amnesty period for XL Bully’s and types in rescue by up to 18 months

Extend the amnesty period for XL Bully’s and types in rescue by up to 18 months
The Issue
Rishi Sunak announced in September he was going to ban XL Bully type dogs by the end of this year.
We were led to believe there would be an amnesty period, purely because of the logistics and intricacies of what such a ban entailed, that would last until 2025 by the Chief Vet.
On 31st October 2023 we were told that with effect from 1st January 2024 it will be illegal to own, sell, re-home, rescue, buy or breed an XL Bully type dog. A definition of such a dog was published and it has become evident not just an XL Bully is at risk.
Since his original announcement Bully’s have been abandoned, handed into rescues or euthanised.
The numbers is rescues are huge, these dogs do not deserve to be there and this is not a judgment of people who have abandoned their dogs, many have had to chose their homes or their dogs!
The dogs in rescue are able to go through the exemption process, they can be rehomed until 31st December as it currently stands, the SI that has been laid is vague in what happens after that .. DDA1991 sec 1 states no dog exempted dog can change ownership .. this means these dogs will either be euthanised by rescues or live out their life in a kennel.. no dog deserves this!
I have created a parliamentary petition asking they extend the amnesty period by up to 18 months for dogs in rescue at 31/12/23 to allow them the chance to find loving responsible homes as the sentient beings they are. That petition received 21 signatures in 3 minutes and is waiting to be checked before it is made live.. this is an interim type petition to gauge how many actually stand with me on this matter!
please sign, you will have to sign the parliamentary one as well once it’s made live (fingers crossed)
Thank you
