I am haunted by the challenges faced by charities, especially at the end of year when traditionally most donations are made. 2024 was particularly difficult as Canada Post went on strike on November 15, during one of the busiest periods for charity giving. As many of these charities rely on direct mail to reach out to donors, the strike caused severe delays and resulted in many charities falling considerably short of their year-end goals.

Therefore, I urge the Canadian Government to extend the deadline for tax receipts for charitable donations till the end of February, aligning it with the one for Registered Savings Plans (RSPs). This would give the charities an extended window to receive and process donations, thus better ensuring their funding for the invaluable work they do. Also allowing donors the option to apply their tax credit to 2024 or 2025.

This is not just about the survival of charities, it is about the help they provide - about the differences they make in communities, here in Canada and around the world.

Therefore, we are requesting your support to change the tax receipt deadline for charities. This simple administrative change could potentially result in a significant boost in donations, ensuring that charities can continue to do their good work in our communities.
