Extend School Lunch Time from 15 Minutes to 25 Minutes in Elementary and Middle Schools

Extend School Lunch Time from 15 Minutes to 25 Minutes in Elementary and Middle Schools

The Issue

The concern of many parents is that school lunch breaks are too short. A common sentiment is that children do not have enough time to finish their meals and often return home hungry. There is a strong belief that children who are not in a rush to eat their lunch will fare better both behaviorally and educationally.

Research supports this notion too. According to a study from the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, children who had less than 20 minutes to eat lunch consumed 13% less of their meals, 12% less vegetables, and 10% less milk than those who had at least 25 minutes for lunch. This clearly shows that the current 15-minute lunch break is inadequate for children to consume their meals optimally.

A lunch break of 25 minutes could improve children's caloric intake, which is essential for their growth and development, and also help them concentrate better in class by not leaving them hungry. As such, we appeal for elementary and middle schools to have the lunch timings extended from the existing 15 minutes to 25 minutes.
