The Issue

Having lived and worked in Rochester, NY for many years, I've found a valuable outlet and community at the Rochester City Skatepark. This place has become a haven for many likeminded individuals seeking recreation and connection after a long day at work. Especially during warm summer evenings, the skatepark offers a sense of freedom and relaxation that is much needed.

However, the current closing time of 10 PM restricts these experiences significantly for many working adults, myself included, who find it difficult to make it to the park earlier. Extending the skatepark’s closing time by just one hour – from 10 PM to 11 PM – could greatly enhance accessibility and enjoyment for so many of us.

Rochester City is known for supporting community well-being and recreational activities, and extending the skatepark hours aligns with these values. Moreover, skateboarding is not just a fun activity but also promotes physical health, mental relaxation, and social connection – aspects that empower our community.

The skatepark is a relatively safe and monitored environment, and keeping it open later could even ensure that those looking for nighttime activities have a positive and designated place to go, creating further safety across the community.

Furthermore, in the growing heat of summer, evenings become the most pleasant time for outdoor activities. Allowing an additional hour for those who thrive on these moments ensures that residents make the most of their outdoor spaces.

We urge the city officials and parks department to consider this change and support local residents in balancing work life and leisure. Your signature can make a difference in advocating for a more inclusive community resource. Please sign this petition to show your support for extending the Rochester City Skatepark hours to 11 PM.
