The Issue

Recess isn't just what most teachers think; they assume it's merely a time for kids to scream and yell. But for us, it's so much more. It's not only fun but also plays a crucial role in leadership and development. During recess, children are active, and this activity can aid in preparing them for sports they might want to pursue like soccer, basketball, and volleyball. For children, it provides a vital break from subjects like reading, math, science, and history, which many find challenging.

Beyond its fun and social aspects, recess is critical for physical health. It helps children burn calories and maintain fitness, which is essential in a time when childhood obesity is a rising concern in our society. According to the CDC, about 14.4 million children and adolescents in the United States are affected by obesity. Extending recess could help counteract this problem by promoting active play and encouraging physical exercise.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has emphasized the importance of play, stating that it is essential for healthy child development, and enhances learning readiness, behaviors, and problem-solving skills.

In light of these benefits, extending recess time should be a priority. It's not just about playing; it's about preparing for the future - physically, socially, and intellectually. Please sign this petition to advocate for longer recess periods in schools, ensuring children get the time they deserve to grow holistically.
