Extend Property Tax Exemptions to All 100% VA Disabled Veterans

Extend Property Tax Exemptions to All 100% VA Disabled Veterans
The Issue
I am a 100% VA disabled veteran proud to have served my country, and hold both a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for my service. Despite these sacrifices, current laws limit property tax exemptions to veterans that are both 100% VA disabled and were Prisoners of War, which leaves many of us out. There are a decreasingly small number of veterans who meet this standard, given the nature of recent conflicts which resulted in few Prisoners of War.
These laws fail to recognize the varied, challenging experiences and sacrifices many veterans face in their service. The Congressional Research Service reports that as of 2020, over 4.7 million veterans have been classified as disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Yet, a very small fraction of this population qualifies for such exemptions, highlighting the exclusionary nature of the current legislation.
We strongly urge the revision of these laws to extend the property tax exemption to all veterans classified as 100% VA disabled, irrespective of their Prisoner of War status. This constitutes a more inclusive, appreciative gesture towards the sacrifices made by our valorous servicemen and servicewomen. We believe each and every sacrifice made in service to our country deserves recognition and support. Those of us who have given so much in defense of our shared freedoms should not be overlooked because of narrow legislative language.
We call on legislative bodies at the state and federal levels to consider this proposed change and demonstrate their respect for all veterans. Stand with us. Recognize our sacrifice. Sign this petition.
