Extend Paid Maternity Leave to 12 Weeks
The Issue
I am a mother who was given only 4 weeks of paid maternity leave by my company. My husband received even less, with just 2 weeks of paid leave. It's troubling to consider that animals are recommended not to be separated from their parents until they are at least 8 weeks old, yet human parents are expected to part ways with their newborns after only a few short weeks. While both of us are able to extend our leave with FMLA, that is unpaid time, and we, like many other families, simply cannot afford for to do that.
This is an issue affecting many families across the country. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 16% of private industry workers had access to paid family leave in 2018 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). This lack of support for new parents is alarming and needs urgent attention.
Extending PAID maternity leave would provide immense benefits for both children and parents. Research shows that longer maternity leaves can lead to better infant health outcomes, including reduced infant mortality rates (National Institutes of Health). Furthermore, it allows mothers adequate time for recovery and bonding with their newborns.
We urge lawmakers and employers alike to consider extending paid maternity leave from the current standard - often as low as 2 weeks - up to 12 weeks. This change will ensure healthier families and stronger societal bonds. Please sign this petition if you believe in supporting new mothers and fathers during one of the most critical times in their lives.
