Extend FUSD transitional kindergarten to a full-day schedule and add some academic focus
The Issue
Note: For this petition no money support is required only your vote is required
FUSD currently operates TK on a compressed 3-hour and 20-minute schedule, split into separate morning (AM) and afternoon (PM) cohorts. While this foundational year is crucial for early childhood development, the short, mid-day scheduling presents severe equity and logistical challenges for local families:
The Working Parent Dilemma: A mid-day dismissal (11:20 AM for AM cohorts) or a mid-day drop-off (11:30 AM for PM cohorts) makes it nearly impossible for dual-income or single-parent households to maintain standard employment without relying heavily on costly private childcare or scrambling for limited on-site afternoon program slots.
Educational Equity: Many surrounding school districts in California have already transitioned—or are actively transitioning—to full-day TK to support working-class families and give early learners a more comprehensive, unhurried introduction to foundational social and academic skills.
Logistical Strains on Families: Managing contrasting schedules for families with older siblings enrolled in full-day FUSD elementary schedules adds unnecessary commute and coordination friction to the daily routine.
Also currently, the schedule consists entirely of free play with no academic instruction. I request that we reinstate the pre-pandemic academic curriculum to bring more balance to the school day.
Our Demand to the FUSD School Board:
We respectfully urge the Fremont Unified School District administration to allocate resources, utilize state-level universal pre-K expansion funding, and restructure facilities to extend TK hours to match full-day elementary hours.
By signing this petition, we ask FUSD to prioritize working families and give our youngest students the robust, equitable start they deserve.
While the challenges outlined above affect every family differently, I am launching this petition on behalf of the many FUSD parents, guardians, and neighbors I have spoken with directly. From working families trying to balance unyielding job schedules to parents managing multi-school drop-offs for older siblings, the structural gap left by a half-day TK schedule impacts our entire community. I stand in solidarity with all members of our district who need equitable, accessible, and full-day early education options, and I urge you to join us in signing this request.
