Extend disability benefits beyond age 65

Extend disability benefits beyond age 65
The Issue
In Canada, individuals living with disabilities face numerous challenges throughout their lives, and the support they receive from the Disability Tax Benefit (DTB) and Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is crucial in alleviating some of these burdens. However, the current policy discontinues the disability benefit once a person reaches the age of 65. This arbitrary age limit is unjust and fails to recognize the lifelong nature of many disabilities.
Statistics from the Government of Canada indicate that as of the latest survey, nearly 22% of the population aged 15 years and above experience some form of disability. As these individuals age, their need for ongoing financial support doesn't cease. On the contrary, their expenses often increase due to additional health-related needs and the fixed or limited income that often accompanies retirement.
Ending the disability benefit at age 65 can lead to increased financial insecurity for disabled seniors. Research shows that the average income of senior households in Canada stands at $61,200, lower for single seniors, with essential expenses such as healthcare, housing, and daily living taking up a significant portion. Without the DTB and DTC, many disabled seniors face the risk of poverty and unstable living conditions.
The Government of Canada must take immediate action to amend this policy, extending the Disability Tax Benefit which is paid monthly, beyond the age of 65. This change is not only fair but necessary, ensuring that those who live with disabilities continue to receive the support they need to maintain a decent quality of life.
We propose a structured policy review involving discussions with advocacy groups, financial experts, and affected individuals to create a sustainable plan for this extension. By doing so, the government will demonstrate its commitment to inclusivity, equity, and the well-being of the disabled community.
Join us in calling upon the Canadian government to revise this policy and provide our disabled seniors with the support they need and deserve. Sign this petition to make a stand for fairness and justice for our elders.
