Expose mental health system failures in Ballarat and Oasis Mental Health, VIC
The issue
My daughter, Lily, suffers from anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). For more than two years, our family has been wrestling with a mental health system that has repeatedly failed us. We have encountered one systemic failure after another as we have fought to get Lily the support she needs to thrive and live a fulfilling life like other children her age. Our experience has been fraught with challenges, and I am prepared to share our story to bring about meaningful change.
Here in Victoria, the mental health system is riddled with roadblocks that prevent timely and effective treatment for those who are neurodivergent. The lack of specialized care and understanding for children with such conditions has left too many families feeling helpless and unsupported. Research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that nearly half of Australians will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. Yet, the resources and infrastructure to support these individuals remain inadequate.
Lily's story is not unique. There are countless families like ours in Horsham and across Victoria who are being let down by a system that should protect and nurture our most vulnerable. Early intervention and specialized support are critical for children with ASD, ADHD, and similar conditions; however, these services are often out-of-reach due to systemic inadequacies and lack of funding.
It is time for our leaders to recognize the gravity of this issue and take urgent action. We call for an overhaul of the mental health services in Horsham, VIC, with a focus on increasing funding, providing specialized training for healthcare professionals, and ensuring that children like Lily can access the care they need without undue delay.
Please join us in demanding a mental health system reform that includes reliable support for neurodivergent individuals and their families. Sign this petition to help us bring about a change that will positively impact the futures of so many children in our community. Together, we can build a system that truly supports mental health and well-being for everyone.
