The Issue

As concerned parents, residents, students, alumni, and supporters of Midland Park Public Schools, we are writing to draw attention to the growing need for skilled workers in New Jersey. Personal observations and research into the state's workforce projections reveal a critical gap that, if addressed, could secure a better future for our children while meeting the employment demands of the state.

By 2035, projections indicate New Jersey will require an additional 6,136 electricians, 4,455 plumbers, and 2,719 construction laborers. This is not just a statistic but a clear indication of the opportunities available for those who are equipped with the necessary skills. Currently, many of our young people are unaware or unable to access the educational pathways that would equip them for a career in the skilled trades.

Electrical, plumbing, and construction industries are actively investing in apprenticeship and training programs, highlighting a persistent need for a steady pipeline of qualified workers. These organizations recognize that the strength of their workforce lies in their ability to attract and train new talent. However, to truly harness this potential, our educational institutions need to play a pivotal role by providing the foundational knowledge and skills at the high school level.

We propose that Midland Park Public Schools explore the creation of a Skilled Trades Career Pathway, starting with a pilot program for approximately 25 high school students. This program would offer students hands-on learning experiences and access to industry mentors, preparing them for apprenticeships and skilled trades careers right upon graduation. With such a pathway, our students can gain a competitive edge in the job market and have the option to pursue a fulfilling career without bearing the burden of college-related debt.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for the future of our students and supporting an initiative that aligns educational outcomes with employment opportunities. Let's ensure that our children have the skills they need to succeed in a changing world. Please lend your voice to this cause by signing the petition and helping us encourage Midland Park Public Schools to invest wisely in our children's futures.
