The document that was voted on in the UN General Assembly that brought the UN Human Rights Council into existence ( A /60/L.48 ) on item 8 specifies the process to remove a member of the UN Human Rights Council, and is the basis for this petition.
- 8. Decides that the membership in the Council shall be open to all Member States of the United Nations; when electing members of the Council, Member States shall take into account the contribution of candidates to the promotion and protection of human rights and their voluntary pledges and commitments made thereto; the General Assembly, by a two-thirds majority of the members present and voting, may suspend the rights of membership in the Council of a member of the Council that commits gross and systematic violations of human rights;
In the petition we present a partial list of reasons why Cuba should be voted off the UN Human Rights Council for committing gross and systematic human rights violations. Another reason was presented yesterday with the ongoing plight of Cuban political prisoner Enrique Mustelier Sosa and hundreds more.
