Expel and Deplatform Thaddeus Green from Bowie State University
The Issue
As members of the Bowie State University student body, we feel compelled to address an increasing concern that affects not only our peers but the overall integrity and safety of our esteemed institution. Several individuals have come forward with troubling accounts of encountering sexual misconduct at the hands of Thaddeus Green, stories that disturbingly share similar patterns despite these victims not knowing each other prior to their unfortunate experiences.
Thaddeus Green found himself on stage with the likes of Dr. Breaux, Bowie State University's president, despite being unenrolled from ROTC due to a sexual harassment/assault response and prevention incident, also known as SHARP. He sexually harassed a plethora of female comrades while representing Bowie State's ROTC battalion.
The concern of who represents Bowie State University is not from a place of malice, but rather a place of urge to spread awareness on this matter.
A plethora of victims who wish to remain anonymous have come forward with testimonies that mirror each other. One victim stated that when she was a freshman and was looking for job opportunities, Thaddeus had approached her about an interview opportunity for a job. She was then sexually assaulted in Thaddeus's car in an empty parking lot. Another victim states that she was approached by Thaddeus while she was a freshman under the pretense that he was a movie producer and looking for actresses for a postcoital scene that would involve kissing. She was not made aware of this initially and refused his offer when she found out before anything transpired. Another victim states that when she was a freshman, she was lured into his dorm room under the pretense that he had a gaming setup and she was interested in playing games together, as it is a hobby she is passionate about. There was no gaming setup. He then sexually assaulted her, and she left his room.
The problem isn't that these freshman women trusted him; the problem is what he did with said trust. The sexual misconduct Thaddeus Green has perpetrated will not go unnoticed. Victims will not be institutionally silenced. Stories will be heard. Now more than ever, we must address everything Thaddeus Green has done to the women of Bowie State's student body, as he represents that student body. We are tired of having to share a campus with sexual predators and victims having to face their perpetrator every single day. Where is the protection? With title 9? The same title 9 that is unable to provide a sense of safety for victims? The same title 9 that has been overhauled by the trump administration, thus leading to a narrower definition of what constitutes sexual misconduct? We have weighed and explored all options for justice, all except for community. Community is the last resort, and it's all we truthfully have at the end of the day at Bowie State University. We want to be proud of our HBCU, but that is impossible when our HBCU is protecting and platforming sexual predators.
